Cuskelly Captures PSA Tour Event In China By Rob Dinerman
Australian stand-out Ryan Cuskelly, who recently joined the Black Knight roster of sponsored PSA players, recorded possibly the biggest tournament win of his career this past weekend when he parlayed a pair of five-game victories to earn the Bailian New Era Mall China Squash Open in Shanghai. It was the sixth career PSA title for the second-seeded Cuskelly, four of which have now come in calendar 2009.
He dropped one game against his Danish opponent Kristian Oleson in the quarterfinal round, the same stage in which top seed Jan Koukal was eliminated by Dick Lau, whose unexpected exploits left him too drained to prevent fourth seed Matthew Karwalski (a quarters 3-2 winner against ’07 U. S. Intercollegiate Individual champ Siddharthe Suchde) from sprinting past him in a straight-set semi. For his part, Cuskelly was pushed all the way in his semifinal by Max Lee before finally winning the fifth game by a score of 11-6.
The final between Cuskelly and his Aussie compatriot Marwalski also went the full five-game limit, with Cuskelly seeing his two games to love edge evaporate in the face of his opponent’s rally. Anything could have happened in the fifth game between two fatigued but determined contestants, but Cuskelly forged a substantial early-game lead and never let up in finishing that game off 11-2. Currently ranked No. 60 in the world, Cuskelly is playing the best squash of his career and has his sights firmly set on moving up in the PSA standings.
